Minori - Italy Amalfi Coast

Minori - the gorgeous little sister

Anyone fascinated by the beauty and richness of the coast of Amalfi should not forget to stop in Minori. It is only a few kilometers away from Amalfi and Ravello and has also become a town with a special charm that attracts tourists.

Minori was founded in the 7th century B.C. by the Etruscans and was later occupied by the Roman Patricians. All this is documented by the archaeological digs of the Villa Romana Maritima. The Villa Romana was built in the times of the emperor Augustus.

Minori for gourmet-lovers

In the days of the Repubblica di Amalfi it was a place where many trade ships docked and sold their good off to intermediate sellers. In the year 987 it became a diocesan town.

The river Reghinna Minor flows through the center of this town. Many paper makers and millers settled along the bans of this river. It was here that the first prototypes of a dish were developed that we can’t even dream of living without these days – pasta. Back then the fresh pasta was dried in the sun in the town squares and along the “Lungomare” promenade. Back then it was especially popular to eat the pasta with different sea-foods, and that tradition is still quite popular today in Mediterranean cooking.

Museum Villa Romana – The Roman Villa of Minori

The roman Patricians started building villas outside of Rome where they could escape from the hectic hustle and bustle of the big city. They wanted to be able to enjoy their time of in peace and quiet. In those times the Villa Romana in Minori could only be reached by sea and was hidden from robbers and pirates. This great mansion had about 30 rooms, a garden, a dining room with a well and built in sofas. In the museum you can see things from this time such as frescos, assorted clay vessels and parts of the old walls.
